This technology is the result of research conducted by MIT professor Daniel Nocera, who calls the method "artificial photosynthesis." The pure oxygen helps replenish the "city" air we breathe, or can be pumped back into the cabin (like they do in Las Vegas casinos) to give you the extra boost you need on your way to work. Or an actual high depending on the quantity of O2 we’re talking about – how’s that for air "conditioning".

The car’s body consists of transparent solar panels, which "collect ambient light" and create electricity. Now, that current doesn’t simply power an electric motor. The electricity is fed into a water tank to split the hydrogen from the oxygen. The hydrogen is stored and used to power the vehicle while the pure oxygen comes out the exhaust. The car essential functions like a plant does, with its own version of photosynthesis. Funky, isn’t it?

That’s your future city car au naturelle. Hey, if this works out, in 2020 you can trade in your obsolete 10 year-old Chevy Volt for this oxygen-filled, happy-making machine. Sounds like fun.

Looking ahead 10 years into the future, Nicolas Stone, a recent graduate of the College for Creative Studies, has developed a city-car concept as part of his thesis. The project was sponsored by Hyundai and features a design based on advanced technologies from MIT.

The car was designed by Nicolas Stone, and sticking with the naturalist theme, the interior cabin comes with a design that mimics "leaves growing off a stem" and with the seating laid out asymmetrically. The cabin’s principle is to keep things as "open and airy" as possible.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the F-CELL Roadster project. The F-CELL Roadster is controlled with drive-by-wire technology, and a joystick takes the place of a conventional steering wheel. The vehicle is powered by a 1.2 kW emission-free fuel cell system located at the rear. It could reach a top speed of 25 km/h and achieve an operating range of up to 350 km(217 mile)."The F-CELL Roadster uniquely combines state-of-the-art technologies with the history of vehicle construction. As an allusion to the Benz Patent Motor Car from 1886, the vehicle is fitted with large spoked wheels.Moreover, the F-CELL Roadster incorporates stylistic elements from diverse eras of automotive history, such as the carbon-fiber bucket seats with hand-stitched leather covers and the distinctively styled fiberglass front section, based on the component from the Formula One racing bolides."

We have heard some unusual concept names – but we have to admit that this new one is very different – Project Alligator. This is the code name for the new supercar that is being worked on by both Mercedes and Aston Martin.

CAR’s September issue gets into all the details, which includes such things as the possible use of AMG’s 6.2-liter V8 in the next Vantage, porting over Mercedes’ future eight-speed auto ‘box into Astons, sharing platforms between both automaker’s high-end models (think SL and beyond), cooperating on the development of diesels and hybrids, and using Aston’s future products to keep Maybach alive and maybe even help the wayward ultra-luxury brand thrive with up to five new models. But it gets even bigger.
