Samsung Galaxy S2 updates to Android 4.0

UK Users of the massively successful Samsung Galaxy S2 are now receiving the updates for Android 4.0 that launched earlier in the month in a number of other European countries. The Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 update for the Galaxy S2 was made available for users in Sweden, Hungary Poland and Korea from the 13th of March, before being launched in the UK a week later prior to a programme of gradual launches across the rest of the world. Ice Cream Sandwich is the most up to date version of the mobile operating system developed by Google, and the availability of this system for the Galaxy S2 has been eagerly awaited by fans of the handset.

The Galaxy S2 has become one of the biggest selling and most popular of all of Samsungs mobile phone range since it was originally released in 2011 and the company is currently estimated to have sold more than 20 million of the S2 mobiles in that time. Despite this the company has been comparatively slow in making this Android 4.0 upgrade available for users of the S2, compared to some of the other Samsung phones.

The company’s Galaxy Nexus smartphone was given the status of being the first handset for a mobile device to have Ice Cream Sandwich, when it was upgraded to feature the system last November. However, despite this, sales of the Galaxy S2 have remained extremely strong and with the operating system now set to be available for users of the phone – at least in the UK – it is likely to remain one of the best-selling of all the Samsung phones available.

“Samsung UK can confirm that the rollout of Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) on Galaxy S2 will be available from week commencing March 19, however the availability of software upgrades in the UK will be dependent upon each network’s own software approvals process,” the company stated.

IE 9 will have complete or nearly complete support for all CSS 3 selectors, border-radius CSS 3 property, faster JavaScript, and hardware accelerated rendering using Direct2D  and DirectWrite. During the October 2009 Typ09  conference, Microsoft was reported as saying that it was ‘considering’ supporting WOFF in Internet Explorer 9. WOFF is “a strong favourite” for standardization by the W3C Web Fonts Working Group.

Microsoft has continued to downplay the importance of passing the Acid3 test, but speculation that IE 9 would support the SVG W3C recommendation was ignited when Microsoft announced they had joined the SVG Working Group. The build of IE 9 presented on the PDC, scored 32/100, up from 20/100 for Internet Explorer 8.

At MIX10, a new preview was released that featured support for CSS3 and SVG, a new Javascript engine called Chakra, and a score of 55/100 on the Acid3 test. The final build of Internet Explorer 9 is expected to be released in 2011. Support for the HTML5 video and audio tags was also promised. Some industry experts claim that Microsoft will release IE 9 as a major out-of-band version that is not tied to any particular version of Windows.
